Mieko and the Fifth Treasure Reading Group

Add caption

Hello ESL B students. This is where you will post your comments about your reading. Let's start by making 1 connection to the book.

Here's my response:

One personal connection with the book is that I lived in Japan and taught English. When I lived in Japan, I visited the museum in Hiroshima. The displays inside the museum helped give me an idea of how terrible the destruction was. In the book, Mieko lives with effects of the bomb every day. She is separated from her parents and has to learn how to use her hand again after being injured by the bomb. This means that she is not able to paint, which is something she likes doing very much.

Outside of the museum is a peace flame which burns all the time. It helps people remember the horrors of nuclear war - Hiroshima was the first city to experience a nuclear bomb. When I saw the peace flame, I remember thinking it was a powerful reminder to people of what war can do and how important creating peace in the world is.

2009 was the 64th anniversary of the dropping of the bomb. I found this very powerful blog that has pictures of the ceremony. Check out the link below.
64th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima

Now it's your turn. Write about 1 connection about the book. You could make a connection with one of the characters, one of the settings or something that someone says.

Happy blogging!

  4. Mieko is like an only child because she is lonely, sometimes she acts like a baby, sometimes she is selfish and she gets more love from her parents, She was lonely because the bomb was dropped in her town and she had to live with her grandma, sometimes she acts like a baby because she cries and she doesn't want to go to school. Meiko gets more love from her she is an only child.

    Chockanan.

  5. Mieko is an only child. She has outstanding feature in only child. She is lonely. At first, nobody play with her. She is alone. She is also confused. After the bomb dropped on her hometown-Nagasaki. She injured her hand. Everyone say "monster-hand" to her at school. She feels so confused. She dependents on her parents. After she goes her grandpants home. She always miss her parents and write letter to her parents.

  6. Mieko is like an only child because she is quiet, lonely and like to do something by herself. First, she is quiet when she goes to school. She likes sitting in the corner and never talks with each other. Second ,she is lonely. she has no friends and she feels frightened and angry because the children tease her about her scarred hand. She says she hate them. Third ,she likes to do something by herself. When Mieko first from school to go home. Her teacher Miss Suzuki wants to ask someone to send Mieko home, but Mieko says she can go home by herself.
